Girls basketball: Mesa rallies
IRVINE Junior Rhondi Naff hit a 40-foot shot at the buzzer to send
the game into overtime and Costa Mesa High dominated in extra time to
earn a 61-54 victory over host Northwood in a Pacific Coast League girls
basketball game Tuesday.
With the victory, the Mustangs are tied with Northwood for third place
in league.
Eileen Bello hit two free throws for the the Mustangs (9-14, 3-4 in
league) in overtime, but Northwood inched back to tie the score, 53-53.
It was all Costa Mesa from there. Naff scored five of the Mustangs’
last seven points in overtime.
Going into the fourth quarter, Costa Mesa trailed by eight points, but
went on a 9-1 run to start the period and switched to a full-court press
to turn the things around.
Naff scored 19 points and had four assists and three steals to lead
Costa Mesa. Rickell Reeves pitched in with a career-high 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Northwood falls to 6-17, 3-4.
