Girls basketball: Newport 0-2 in Sea View
NEWPORT BEACH - The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team
agonized over visiting Irvine’s free-throw shooting in the Sailors’ 52-36
Sea View League loss Thursday. The Vaqueros shot 18 of 22 from the foul
line to hold off any hope of a Newport comeback.
Sophomore Jillianne Whitfield led the Sailors (2-15, 0-2 in league)
with 11 points. Senior Evita Castillo, in her first game back since an
ankle injury suffered in the Costa Mesa Tournament, scored 10 points and
provided intense defense.
Castillo covered Irvine’s Kristen Thawley and limited her to four
field goals made.
“The score doesn’t show, but we had a really good defensive game,”
Newport Coach Jen Thompson said. “I was a little worried about
(Castillo’s) stamina, but she did great. I feel we’re improving each
game. You can see improvement in each game we play.”
The Sailors will play at Laguna Hills Tuesday at 7 p.m.
