Girls basketball: Mustangs shooting woes continue

COSTA MESA - The Costa Mesa High girls basketball team lost a
six-point lead in the final 3:44 and fell to Pacific Coast League visitor
Northwood, 34-29, Thursday.
The Mustangs (6-11, 0-2 in the PCL) shot 9 of 12 in the third quarter
and outscored Northwood, 19-6, but Mesa shot 4 of 40 in the other three
quarters.
In addition, Costa Mesa junior forward Rhondi Naff suffered a muscle
cramp in her leg and sat out the final 3:44. The Timberwolves (5-14, 1-1)
then went on a 11-0 run.
Naff led the Mustangs with eight points and dished out three assists,
while senior Lauren Carich led with eight rebounds.
“That definitely hurt us,” Costa Mesa Coach Jim Weeks said of Naff’s
injury. “It’s just a cramp and she’ll be back. It was just one of those
things.”
The Mustangs return to action Tuesday at 7 p.m., facing crosstown
rival Estancia at the Eagles’ gym.
