CORONA DEL MAR - Yogi Johnson, a late-season volunteer assistant
coach for Corona del Mar High’s softball team last spring, has been named
to replace Terry Cristiano as the Sea Kings’ new head coach, according to
CdM Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick.
A Laguna Beach resident with an extensive, and successful, background
in the sport, she acknowledges the time factor (first day of practice is
Feb. 12), but said, “I’m excited about being at Corona del Mar. This is
going to be a fun year.”
Johnson, a Patrick Henry High standout in softball in the San Diego
Section as a prep who went on to Oregon State (1976-79) and Oregon
(80-81), was a first baseman with clout, setting home run records and
gathering personal honors throughout her career, from the “Bobby Sox”
level to the Italian National Team, where she played and coached.
