The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team edges past Back Bay rival
Corona del Mar, 39-37, before a full audience at Newport Harbor, in a Sea
View League opener for both teams. Newport’s Mark McAnlis swishes in the
game-winner with 1:06 left, giving the Sailors a 36-34 edge, a lead they
will hold the rest of the way. The game is delayed twice in the first
quarter because of toys being thrown from the stands. The game is almost
canceled but order is restored and the Sailors, coached by Bob Serven, go
on to win. Coach Paul Orris’ Sea Kings are led by Doug Hesse and his nine
points. The Sailors answer with McAnlis’ 12 points and 15 from Justin
McIntee.
The Sailors’ girls basketball team also wins a close game over Back
Bay rival CdM, 53-51. Maureen McLaren is one of three Sailors to score in
double figures, finishing with 10 points. Michaela Ross scores 16, while
Gina Heads adds 12. CdM is led by Mollie Flint, who scores a game-high 21
points, including an 11 of 13 effort from the free-throw line.
The Estancia boys basketball team opens Pacific Coast League play with
a 66-45 victory over visiting Laguna Beach. Matt Fuerbringer scores a
game-high 22 points, which includes back-to-back alley-oop jams off feeds
from Ty Schisler, who also adds six points. Jim Faulkner scores 16 and
guard Joe Edson chips in 11 points.

The Newport Harbor High wrestling team pulls off a shocker in its Sea
View League opener, topping reigning and perennial league champion
Irvine, 38-29, on the Vaqueros’ mats. The two teams are tied, 29-29,
heading into the final two matches. Jesus Pimental puts the Sailors up,
32-29, by gaining an 11-8 decision in the 215-pound weight class, leaving
Jason Deere to put the win away in the heavyweight division. Deere pins
his opponent 1:32 into his match. Brad Lim (103), Jeffrey Arrellano (112)
and Matt Large (119) get the Sailors rolling with a major decision, a
technical fall and a pin, respectively.
The Newport Harbor boys soccer team is the unofficial king of the
Newport-Mesa District after a 3-0 victory over Estancia. The Sailors
nonleague win ends the Eagles’ seven-game winning -- and shutout --
streak. Manuel Oporeza booms in a penalty kick to get the Sailors
started, 15 minutes into the game. Oporeza adds his second goal one
minute later. Brett Baker puts in the final tally for the Tars, poking in
a rebound off a Tobin Junowich direct kick 11 minutes into the second
half. Newport goalkeeper Zach Wells records five saves, as does
Estancia’s goalie Brad Wayman.
The Costa Mesa girls water polo team edges past district rival Corona
del Mar, 10-9, in the Corona del Mar-Newport Harbor Tournament. The
Mustangs lead 10-7 with two minutes left and hold on for the win. Amy
Devey and Carrie Howse score three goals each for Costa Mesa. CdM’s
Meagan Hardt scores seven goals.
