Girls basketball: Tars bested
COSTA MESA - The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team fell
victim to some familiar third-quarter doldrums and went on to lose to
Carlsbad, 45-29, in the fifth-place semifinal Friday of the Costa Mesa
Winter Classic at Costa Mesa High.
The Sailors (2-13) led, 18-15, at halftime, but were outscored, 19-6,
in the third quarter.
“We came out flat (after halftime),” said Newport Coach Jen Thompson.
Junior Athena Vasquez had a team-high 13 points, including 4 of 4 from
the free-throw line, to lead the Sailors, who face Tustin today at 1:30
p.m. for seventh place.
