Boys basketball: Conte sparks Mesa

ORANGE - Costa Mesa High senior guard David Conte amassed 35 points
and 10 assists to lead the Mustangs to an 84-62 first-round Orange
Holiday Classic boys basketball win over Kent Lake of Washington
Wednesday at Chapman University.
Conte, whose career- and season-high scoring output is 43, scored 11
points in both the second and third quarters, nailing six three-pointers
for the game.
Senior Chad Vakili added 19 points and center Carlos Jaime had 12
points and six boards for the winners (8-4), who meet Cabrillo of Long
Beach today at 5:10 p.m. in a championship quarterfinal.
Coach Bob Serven’s Mustangs, who have now won four straight, outscored
Kent Lake in every quarter and seized a 19-8 lead after the first eight
minutes.
