SPOTLIGHT

‘BLAST!’

Ever wonder what happens to the people you see in the Tournament of

Roses Parade marching bands after their high school or college days are

over? Well, some of them end up performing onstage in the Tony

Award-winning show “Blast!,” which combines drum corps rhythms with

dance, lighting and acrobatics. The show will come to the Orange County

Performing Arts Center on Thursday.

Critics have described the show, which originated with the Star of

Indiana drum corps, as a “visual and aural juggernaut,” a “celebration of

movement and music” and “indeed a blast.”

Musicians spin in cartwheels, trumpet players are lowered from the

ceiling, percussionists spin in gravity machines and baton twirlers twirl

everything from flag poles to sabers to glow-in-the-dark sticks.

Although there isn’t a plot to the show, there is a theme in the form

of colors. The show is making its West Coast debut.
