Girls basketball: Newport routs San Pedro, 50-23
MISSION VIEJO - Senior forward Evita Castillo scored 15 points and
grabbed 12 rebounds (seven offensive) as Newport Harbor High’s girls
basketball team defeated San Pedro, 50-23, in a consolation game Saturday
in the Mission Viejo Tournament.
The Sailors (2-10) led from beginning to end, outscoring San Pedro in
every quarter.
“Everyone as a team played tremendous,” Newport Harbor Coach Jen
Thompson said. “We played four quarters. We talked to each other and
Evita made sure everyone was in the right place on the press and on
defense. We communicated very well, ran the offense well and it was an
all-around great team effort.”
Junior Lindsey Woller added eight points and eight rebounds for the
Sailors, while Jillianne Whitfield had eight points and seven rebounds,
Amanda Campbell six boards and Athena Vasquez four steals.
Newport Harbor opens Wednesday in the Costa Mesa Tournament against
University High of San Diego at 3 p.m.
