ANAHEIM - After a three-game lull that included two losses and a
come-from-behind victory, the Newport Harbor High boys basketball team
put things together Friday, trouncing Esperanza, 65-43, in the
consolation semifinals of the Anaheim Convention Center Holiday Classic.
Coach Larry Hirst said 6-foot-8 sophomore center Jamie Diefenbach
kick-started the “total team effort” by scoring six of the Sailors first
10 points.
Harbor (9-4), ranked No. 10 in Orange County, outscored the Aztecs in
every quarter and led by as many as 32 in the fourth quarter.
Tony Melum had 18 points and 11 rebounds and fellow Harbor senior Erik
Peterson added 17 points for the winners, who meet future Sea View League
rival Foothill for the consolation crown today at 4:30 p.m. at the
Anaheim Convention Center.
Diefenbach finished with eight points, as did junior guard Chase
Cameron.
