Notes from the championship game

Tommy Grady’s incredible streak came to an end. With 2:29 remaining in

the game, Edison’s junior quarterback had his long pass downfield

intercepted by Poly’s Kevin Tapp. It was only the third interception

thrown this season by Grady, and first since he threw two in the fourth

quarter of a 14-14 tie with Los Alamitos back on Oct. 25. That’s a span

of 23-plus quarters without being intercepted.

* Grady also threw four touchdown passes in the game, each going to

senior receiver Denny Flanagan. That pushed Grady’s single-season school

record for touchdown passes to 33.

* Edison gambled on fourth down on five occasions, converting three.

Two times it paid off in the form of a touchdown, the other on a 37-yard

gain by A.J. Martinez on a great fake punt attempt on a fourth-and-10

play from the Edison 17-yard line late in the second quarter. Four plays

later, Edison scored to forge a 14-14 halftime tie.

* The 28 points scored by Edison were the most given up by the Poly

defense this season. The Chargers came into the final averaging 48 points

in postseason play.

* The 42 points Poly scored were the most given up by the Edison

defense this season.

* The loss was the first in four championship game appearances for

Edison, which won major division titles in 1979, ’80 and ’85.

* Poly won its fourth title in five years and has won three

consecutive major division titles.

* The Jackrabbits have won an unprecedented 13 Southern Section

titles.

* Since he took over as head coach in 1986, Edison’s Dave White has a

record of 115-59-3.

* Poly’s Raul Lara won a championship in his first year as head coach.

* CIF records show that Poly now has 598 victories, second all-time

among California schools.
