Boys soccer: CdM scores quick in 2-1 win
CORONA DEL MAR - The Corona del Mar High boys soccer team scored
two goals in the first five minutes of the second half to earn a 2-1 win
over visiting Calvary Chapel, in nonleague action Wednesday.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore Jeritt Thayer scored off an
assist from senior team captain Andy Almquist in the 48th minute. Two
minutes later, CdM senior goalkeeper Geoff Collier booted a punt which
sailed over Calvary Chapel’s defense and sophomore Danny Whitaker tracked
down the loose ball to score a goal, giving the Sea Kings a 2-0 lead.
CdM’s defense was anchored by goalie Phil Stemler, who turned back
three shots in the first half, while Collier recorded two saves in the
final 45 minutes.
The Sea Kings (3-2) will resume action Friday at 3:15 p.m., when they
will play at Fountain Valley.
