Newport Harbor High senior quarterback Morgan Craig and senior
middle linebacker Cory Ray, who led the Sailors to the Sea View League
football championship this fall, headline a contingent of 15 Harbor
players recognized among the coaches’ all-league picks.
Craig, a two-year starter, is the Offensive Player of the Year, while
Ray, who spearheaded one of Orange County’s stingiest defenses, is
Defensive Player of the Year.
Seniors Brian Gaeta, a receiver, and Robert Chai, a tackle, are repeat
first-team choices offensively for the Sailors, who defeated all four Sea
View opponents en route to the CIF Southern Section Division VI
semifinals and a 10-2-1 record.
Other Newport first-team picks on offense are junior tailback
Dartangan Johnson, senior receiver Adam Kerns and senior center Jeff
Marshall.
Senior outside linebacker Tyler Miller, as well as senior end Jim
Rothwell, represent Newport Harbor on the first-team defense.
Seniors Jon Vandersloot, David Marshall and Bryan Breland, as well as
junior Chris Badorek, are second-team picks on offense, while senior
Scott Kohan and junior Mike McDonald are second-team defensive honorees.
Craig completed 124 of 196 passes (63.3%) for 1,614 yards and 23
touchdowns, with only four interceptions. In addition, he rushed 62 times
for 415 yards and three TDs.
With Ray patrolling the middle, leading the team in tackles, Newport
yielded just 118 points (9.1 per game), second-fewest in Orange County
and tops among Division VI schools.
Johnson, a hard-running catalyst, finished with 1,870 rushing yards on
300 carries and scored 15 touchdowns.
Kerns and Gaeta, two-way starters at receiver and in the secondary,
were Craig’s leading receivers. Kerns had 29 catches for 627 yards and 11
TDs. Gaeta, who missed nearly six games with an ankle injury, finished
with 27 catches for 336 yards and three TDs.
Chai, a 6-4, 270-pound dominator who will continue his career at UCLA,
was a big reason Johnson found so much running room. He was first-team
All-CIF last fall.
Jeff Marshall, a 6-5, 215-pound center, will continue his career at
Division I-AA power Montana.
Miller, a 5-11, 190-pound outside linebacker, and Rothwell, a 5-10,
165-pound defensive end, both sparkled on defense all season.
Vandersloot, who missed much of the preleague season with injuries,
collected 17 receptions for 188 yards and two TDs.
David Marshall, a two-way starter, was a trusted blocker at tight end
and also played some fullback. He was an end on defense.
Breland, a second-team all-league choice a year ago, played guard, as
did Badorek, who should be an anchor up front next season.
Kohan was a 6-2, 263-pound run-stopping force at defensive tackle,
while McDonald, a free safety, shared the team interception lead with
Kerns with five. McDonald, who should start at quarterback next season,
also had 20 receptions for 232 yards and one TD.
Sea View coaches use a format in which they choose players they
believe are the most deserving, regardless of position.
