Prep football: Eight locals first-team All-PCL

Costa Mesa High senior inside linebacker Bobby Arroyo, a repeat

first-team selection, as well as Corona del Mar junior tailback Mark

Cianciulli, highlight a list of 18 locals named to the coaches’

All-Pacific Coast League football selections.

Arroyo, who led Mesa to a third-place finish, was a first-team

defensive selection last year as an Estancia junior.

Cianciulli, who led all PCL rushers with 1,290 regular-season rushing

yards, 869 of which came against league defenses, is a first-team

selection on offense.

Also on the first-team offense are CdM senior tackle Steven Russell, a

second-team pick a year ago, Costa Mesa junior guard Andrew Carich and

Mesa senior tight end John Garcia.

Locals on the first-team defense are Mesa safety Freddy Rodriguez, a

second-team honoree as an Estancia junior, CdM junior tackle Jayson

Skalla, and Estancia senior cornerback Jermaine Snell.

Garcia, a Calvary Chapel transfer, had a team-leading 17 receptions

for 251 yards and two touchdowns for the Mustangs.

The second-team defense includes four Newport-Mesa performers, while

six locals are recognized on the second-team offense.

Costa Mesa running backs Keola Asuega, a junior, and Nick Cabico, a

senior, are second-team choices, as is CdM senior receiver Steven Ward,

CdM junior guard John Daley, Estancia junior tackle Matt Morrell and Mesa

senior quarterback A.J. Perkins.

Asuega finished with 1,047 yards and 15 touchdowns, while Cabico had

791 rushing yards and 153 more on 12 receptions. Cabico scored nine TDs.

Ward had 31 receptions for 400 yards and also led the Sea Kings with

four interceptions.

Perkins completed 63 of 161 passes for 701 yards and eight TDs.

Daley and Cabico were second-team honorees in 2000.

Mesa senior linemen Jesse Cardenas and Doug Amburgey are joined on the

second-team defense by Estancia senior safety Lewis Bradshaw and CdM

junior inside linebacker Matt Cooper.

Senior quarterback Danny Tomcheck, who led Northwood to an unbeaten

regular season and its first league title, shares Offensive MVP honors

with versatile University senior running back Scott Pickett.

Northwood senior safety Bryan Bentrott is the Defensive MVP.

Tomcheck, Pickert and Bentrott were all first-team honorees in 2000.
