Sailors rout Marina, 17-1

Newport Harbor High’s girls water polo team squashed visiting
Marina with an overwhelming attack, often on a counterattack keyed by the
outlet passing of goalie Leah Grocki, as the Sailors racked up a 17-1
nonleague victory to improve to 2-0 Saturday.
“Leah really played well in the goal for us,” said Coach Bill Barnett.
“Her passes were right on the money.”
It was over almost before it started as the Sailors racked up five
goals in each of the first two periods to take a 10-1 lead at halftime.
Jessica Ball had six goals and three steals, and UCLA-bound Katherine
Belden scored four goals, had four assists and seven steals.
Paige Lansing added three goals and three assists, and Jenna Murphy
had two goals, four assists and two steals.
In all the Sailors had 23 steals as they thoroughly dominated the
issue. Raelyn Ritchie had four steals and Ashley Parole had three steals.
Annie Wight had two assists and a steal.
Grocki was credited with six saves, one assist and a steal.
Nicky Probert and Katie Erickson rounded out the scoring with a goal
apiece.
“We’re doing pretty well right now,” said Barnett.”
The Sailors will return to action Tuesday when they host Esperanza.
The program did well overall with the junior varsity slamming Marina,
14-2, and the frosh-soph team winning, 2-0.
