superintendent of the Orange County schools, was honored by the Orange
County Council of the Boy Scouts with the Spurgeon Man of the Year Award

family members in attendance were Kay Spurgeon, Mike Spurgeon, Shelley
Spurgeon McGuire and her husband, Mike, principal of Ensign Intermediate
School.
Huntington Beach Police Chief Ron Lowenberg served as the master of
ceremonies and co-chair along with Chief Chip Prather of the Orange
County Fire Authority. The event had been reschedule from Sept. 12.
A humbled Dean thanked the Boy Scouts for the award and for the
Learning for Life program, “which brings back the joy of learning to
young people,” Dean said. He was accompanied by his wife of 52 years,
