University High’s Angela Won signed a national letter of intent
with the UC Irvine women’s golf team, Coach Kelly Crawford said Tuesday.
“I am thriilled that we have a player of her caliber coming in,”
Crawford said. “She’s been playing in national tournaments for so many
years and she has a good mental game.”
Won has plenty of accomplishments under her belt. She is ranked 51st
overall and 18th among the class of 2002 by GolfWeek magazine. In high
school, she had a 35.4 stroke average and was first in four consecutive
Pacific Coast League finals.
Won also won the CIF Southern Section individual title, qualified to
compete in the 2001 U.S. Junior Girls Championship and finished third at
America’s Cup.
“She knows how to stay focused and doesn’t let little things get to
her,” Crawford said. “That’s one of her strengths she is going to bring
to this level ... She will give us an opportunity for a national
championship.”
The Anteaters are in their first year of competition. They are off
until February, when they will compete in the Lady Aztec Invitational
hosted by San Diego State.
