Girls basketball: Newport falls in first round
Evita Castillo scored 15 points, but it wasn’t enough for Newport
Harbor as the Sailors fell to Santa Margarita, 62-29, in the first round
of the University girls basketball tournament Saturday.
Castillo made nine of 10 from the free-throw line to highlight
Newport’s offense. She also had 10 rebounds. Amanda Cambell had five
rebounds and Jillianne Whitfield piled up four steals for the Sailors.
Newport trailed, 29-19, at haltime and Santa Margarita put the
pressure on even more in the second half, outscoring the Sailors by 23
points.
The Sailors return to tournament play on Monday at 6:30 p.m. against
Thousand Oaks.University Tournament
