Boys water polo: Tars’ Sinclair singled out
Newport Harbor High junior driver Ross Sinclair, who led the
Sailors to their fifth straight Sea View League boys water polo title,
has been named Co-Player of the Year by the circuit’s coaches.
Sinclair, who produced 53 goals, a team-high 37 assists and 25 steals
to help the Tars reach the CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinals,
is joined on the first team by teammates Michael Bury and Nathan Weiner.
Juniors Brent Armstrong and Jay Thompson represent Newport Harbor on
the second team.
“Ross was our captain, the smartest player on our team and our MVP,”
Newport Coach Jason Lynch said. “He led our counter attack and ran our
six-on-fives.”
Bury, a sophomore two-meter man, scored 56 goals, while Weiner, a
junior, posted 59 goals and 21 steals to help the Tars finish 15-15.
Armstrong, a speedster, led the team with 38 steals and added 32
goals, while Riverside transfer Thompson (23 goals and 11 steals) is
another reason the Sailors have a bright 2002 future.
Irvine junior Simon Schafer shares top individual honors with
Sinclair.
