COSTA MESA - Orange Coast College baseball player Scott Beerer will
receive a scholarship to continue his academic and athletic careers at
Texas A&M; University in the fall, Pirates’ Coach John Altobelli announced
Wednesday.
Beerer was Coast’s right-fielder last spring, and was also the Bucs’
No. 1 starting pitcher.
He was one of just three players to start in all 44 games. Against
Reedley in the College of the Sequoias Tournament April 12, Altobelli
showcased his versatility by playing him at all nine positions during the
course of the game.
Beerer led the Pirates with a .395 batting average and had the best
earned-run average (2.99) and the most wins (five) of any of Coast’s
starting pitchers. He will likely pitch and play in the outfield again
this upcoming season (his sophomore year at Coast) and will get the
chance to earn a similar role with the Aggies as a college junior.
Beerer, a product of Newport Harbor High, earned first-team All-Orange
Empire Conference honors and was selected by the Texas Rangers in the
23rd round of June’s baseball draft.
“I’m excited for Scott to get the chance to go to a big-time program
like Texas A&M;,” said Altobelli. “This is a great opportunity for him.”
