Jr. All-American Football: Seahawks triumph

John Angelo scored a 9-yard touchdown in the second half to help
the Newport-Mesa Junior All-American Junior Midget Seahawks earn a 14-8
victory over the Compton Titans and advance to the AFL championship game.
The Titans took advantage of a Seahawks’ turnover in the first half to
take an 8-0 lead.
Compton fumbled the scond half kickoff and Matt Loyd recovered it to
give the Seahawks possession. On the next play, Mike Orosco ran for a
45-yard touchdown and Angelo added two points on the conversion to tie
the score, 8-8.
The Titans fumbled on their next possession. Again, the Seahawks took
advantage with Angelo scoring the winning touchdown.
The Seahawks face the Rowland Heights Raiders Saturday at Caroline
Coleman Stadium in Inglewood at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the OCJAAF
Super Bowl.
In other NMJAAF action:
* Compton Titans 16, Pee Wee Seahawks 14 - The Seahawks put up a
strong fight, but fell to the Titans in the semifinal of the conference
championship to end their season with a 9-2 record.
Quarterback Taylor Sepulveda completed a 45-yard touchdown pass to
Jake Lemmerman in the second quarter after William O’Brien blocked a
Compton punt. Jacob Gildart earned two points on the conversion to tie
the score, 8-8.
Compton pulled ahead of the Seahawks in the third quarter after
scoring on a fake punt. The Seahawks fought back late in the fourth
quarter when Sepulveda hit Carlo Valdes with a 35-yard touchdown pass.
The two-point conversion attempt was blocked to give Compton the win.
The Seahawks’ defense was led by Chaz Vickery, Richie Sorenson, Jon
Tripi, P.J. Simpson, Brice Stillman, Erik Rask, Tommy Folks, Brett
Hanrahan, Will Brown, Steve Deverian and Travis Prickett.
Before the game, the Titans had not had a touchdown scored against
them all season. The Seahawks’ offense challenged Compton throughout the
game and was led by Robbie Lusk, Corbin McNutt, Bryce Jardine, Justin
Elbourn, Danny Malycky, James McKennon, Nick Reese, Jerry Whitney and
Colin Wigely.
