Newport Harbor, in four
Newport Harbor High was a winner in four games in the first round
of the State Playoffs as the Sailors’ girls volleyball team put down host
Liberty High of Bakersfield Tuesday night, 15-7, 15-3, 14-16, 15-3.
The Sailors move on to the second round Saturday night with another
road assignment, this time against a familiar nemesis - Mira Costa of
Manhattan Beach, starting at 7 p.m.
“The kids did a nice job and responded really well in the fourth
game,” said Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn, who added that he, and his
Sailors, were excited about another shot at Mira Costa, which sent the
Sailors home Saturday in the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA Final at
Cypress College with a sweeping defeat.
The Sailors had numbers in every direction Tuesday. Kristin McClune
had 24 kills and Christine Woller had 17. Alyson Jennings had 14 kills
and 15 digs, Liz Lord had 12 kills, 22 digs and three ace serves, and
Andrea Trinen had 17 digs and four ace serves. Setter Katie King had 14
digs and 70 assists in the match, which consumed 105 minutes.
