CORONA DEL MAR - Todd Larsen, a former Western Athletic Conference
breaststroke champion who is an age-group coach at Irvine-based
Novaquatics, has been named boys swim coach at Corona del Mar High, Sea
Kings’ Boys Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick said Tuesday.
Larsen, a 35-year-old walk-on, replaced Tim Chaix, who resigned after
one season.
Larsen, who competed in swimming and track and field at BYU and
Arizona State, said he is anxious to elevate the Sea Kings’ boys swimming
reputation to the level of the boys water polo program, which last week
won its third straight CIF Southern Section Division II title.
“With the talent here at this school, there’s no reason the swim team
can’t be known for its success, too” said Larsen, who began his coaching
career in 1991 at Grand Canyon Aquatics in Arizona. He also coaches the
Heritage Park Seals and is looking forward to his first prep coaching
experience.
“Working with high school athletes at the crux of their developmental
years and helping them come into their own as swimmers is an awesome
opportunity,” the Irvine resident said.
CdM finished second in the Pacific Coast League last spring, after
winning the league title in 1999 under then-coach Jon Moore, a colleague
of Larsen at Novaquatics.
