Ramadan an opportunity to educate

COSTA MESA -- During a time of renewed focus on the religion of Islam

following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, local Muslim leaders said this

year’s celebration of Ramadan will focus on inclusion and education.

When the sun rises Saturday morning, the Muslim community will begin

the monthlong holiday, vowing to concentrate on God and abstain from from

food, drink and “sensual pleasures” from sun up to sunset.

While the holy celebration is deeply rooted in self-purification, Imam

Moustafa Al-Qazwini of the Islamic Educational Center of Orange County

said he wants the holiday to also serve as an open invitation for

non-Muslims to learn about Islamic culture.

“Our doors are open to anyone who wishes to pray or fast with us or

learn more about the religion,” he said.

After Sept. 11, the country witnessed a renaissance in Islamic

awareness, Al-Qazwini said. Thousands of people called the center asking

questions and requesting copies of the Koran.

“I am happy it gives us an opportunity to tell people what true Islam

is,” the imam said.

Fasting is prevalent in many cultures, Al-Qazwini said, not unlike the

Catholic tradition of Lent, a period when parishioners give up a luxury

for 40 days in recognition of the sacrifice Jesus Christ made. The imam

said he hopes members of the community will discover the many

similarities between Muslims and non-Muslims.

“Ramadan purifies the brain and body and soul from toxins. It provides

a renewal of faith and a regeneration of the spirit,” Al-Qazwini said.
