Upsets rule in volleyball tournament

Upsets dominated the Ocean View School District’s middle school
volleyball tournament held last weekend at Ocean View High. Just one
regular season champion -- Vista View -- emerged with a tournament title.
Vista View, which shared the girls’ seventh grade regular season crown
with Marine View, prevailed in three games against the Mariners, 15-4,
15-10, 15-12. Nicole Acosta, Sandy Carroll and Stacy Ridgway played
pivotal roles in Vista View’s win.
In other divisions:
Seventh-grade boys
Mesa View, just 2-4 during the regular season, peaked in tournament
play and upset regular season champion Marine View, 1-15, 15-10, 15-13.
Dax Miller, Ryan Shillito and Mike Wegner spearheaded Mesa’s triumph.
Eighth-grade girls
The third time proved to be a charm for Marine View, which had dropped
two regular season matches to Spring View, but got the best of the
Spartans in the tournament final, 15-3, 15-13. The setting of Parla Alpan
and powerful hitting of Lauren Kridel keyed the victory.
Eighth-grade boys
Mesa View, behind the spikes of Hank Conger and the steady play of
Eric Pedersen and Chris Hickerson, scored a 15-8, 15-4 win over Marine
View.
Marine View made a big turn around once tournament action began. The
Mariners had not won a match all season but rose to the occasion to
surprise league champion Vista View in the semifinals, 15-6, 16-14.
