The Costa Mesa Pop Warner Pee Wee Mustangs came from behind to beat
the Cypress Coyotes, 18-14, in a football game Saturday.
Cody Matthews scored a 65-yard touchdown to start the game for the
Mustangs, but the Cypress Coyotes took a 14-6 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Mustangs played solid defense with Garrick
Williams and Chris Hernandez making key tackles to stop Cypress from
advancing.
Matthews broke through several tackles and ran 75 yards to score a
touchdown to close the scoring gap, 14-12. Andrew Ward, Gilbert Beas and
Antwon Byrd moved the ball well in the fourth quarter to bring the
Mustangs inside the 15-yard line.
On a fake pass on third down, Matthews got the ball and threw it to
Juan Guzman in the endzone. Despite a swarm of Cypress players trying to
block his catch, Guzman held onto the ball giving the Mustangs an 18-14
lead. Garrett Marshall provided some good coverage on the corners to
prevent Cypress from gaining ground.
