Rebels open playoffs with win

The AYSO Region 117 (Huntington Beach/Fountain Valley) soccer playoffs
opened last weekend and the Rebels held off the Red Tide, 3-2, in boys’
Under-12 Division play.
Aaron Stratz scored twice, Scott Mackie scored once. Thomas Avent was
a force on offense for the Rebels, but it was the strong defensive play
of John Albert, Carter Caldwell, Dustin Crain and Colin Carroll that
keyed the victory.

Under-10 Division
Roadrunners 3, Stampede 1
Matthew Steinhaus set up one goal and scored another as the
Roadrunners won their playoff opener. His corner kick set up a Matthew
Strickler goal for a 1-0 lead and following Steinhaus’ own goal, Kyle
Zekaria scored the third goal on a penalty kick. Joel Gilbert and
Nicholas Gregory also contributed offensively.
Nicholas Carrigan came up with several key saves and Roland Moder,
Anthony Nguyen, Andrew Flores and Daniel Resnick led the Roadrunners on
defense.
Asteroids 4, Purple Lightning 2
Teamwork and pinpoint passing gave the Asteroids their playoff win.
Conor Reynolds scored twice and Taylor Nelson and Alan Jones each scored
once. The defense was led by Johnny McFall Casey Lysdale, Michael
Franzoy, Matt Horgan, Jonathan Segal-Kaloski, Bobby Kunkel, Steven Little
and Ben Simons.
REGION 143
Under-14 Division
Marauders 2, Team Without A Name 1
The Marauders ended a perfect season for Team Without a Name. Down
1-0, the Marauders answered with a second-period goal by midfielder
Armando Gonzalez. They took the lead for good midway through the third
quarter as Stryder Huff ran down a loose ball and sidestepped Team
Without a Name’s goalie for the winning score.
David Ocampo rejected several shot attempts to preserve the win for
the Marauders.
REGION 55
Quick Silver, a boy’s Under-12 Division team, finished the regular
season unbeaten and will look to keep that record perfect as playoff
action opens this weekend.
“The guys have been working very hard and are excited about the
upcoming playoffs,” said coach Vatche Boyadjian.
Quick Silver team members include Kevin Gall, Cameron Holz, Patrick
Salveson, Daniel Boyadjian, Daniel Garcia, Gregory Powell, Brian Conroy,
Garret Gill, Matthew Westwell, Jesse Mestas, Robert Simpson, Patrick
Drake, Adam Clark and coaches Boyadjian and David Gill.
GIRLS’
The HB Lightning defeated the Pacific Soccer Club Breakers, 3-1,
Saturday. Janet Peterson scored twice and Aubrie Fuette added the third
goal as the Lightning improved its season record to 3-4-4, good for third
place in the league standings. Jessica Goud and Gena Johnson anchored the
defense with outstanding play in goal and Megan Bell, Blair Connors, Tara
Fox, Danae Lucas, Caitlin McGinnis, Hilary Pohlman, Lindsey Rodgers,
Samantha Serrano and Krista Thompson.
