help students prepare for studies at both University of California and
California State University campuses.
Golden West also offers short-term courses. The highly successful
Weekend Express program allows students to complete courses in
accelerated six-week blocks and offers more than a half-dozen starting
dates throughout the calendar year.
Classes at Golden West College cost just $11 per unit, the lowest
enrollment fee of any college system in the state. More than $10 million
in financial aid is issued each year.
Gayle Bentley named new music director at Edison High
Jim Keys left some big shoes to fill when he retired in June as Edison
High’s longtime music director.
A 30-year music education career, 20 of which were spent at Edison,
Keys was considered an institution in the Huntington Beach Union High
School District and one of the most respected high school music teachers
in Southern California.
“He was the Rolls Royce of music teachers,” said one Edison band
parent.
After the school conducted a lengthy search, those shoes have been
filled: Edison’s new music director is Gayle Bentley.
A Virginia native, Bentley holds a music degree from the University of
Virginia and a master’s degree in music education from the University of
Texas at Austin. She has spent the past few years teaching in a highly
successful junior high school program in Forth Worth, Texas where she has
compiled a remarkable record of achievement.
Bentley was a standout clarinetist during her school days and was the
only student in her county to make the Virginia All-State Band in all
four years of high school.
She also plays tenor saxophone and teaches other instruments including
flute, tuba and euphonium.
“Gayle Bentley is incredibly well-qualified and incredibly devoted to
teaching music to young people,” said Alexis Booher, president of the
Edison High School Band Booster Association and a longtime and parent at
the school. “We may have lost a Rolls Royce when Jim Keys retired, but
we’re gaining a Bentley.”
