CITY COUNCIL WRAP-UP

WHAT HAPPENED

The City Council approved four motions regarding the Bolsa Chica

Lowland Restoration Project.

WHAT IT MEANS

The motions came after a meeting on July 30 between the Bolsa Chica

Council Committee and the Huntington Beach Environmental Board on the

status of the project.

In the first motion, the council supported the construction of a tidal

inlet near Huntington Mesa. The council also supported maintaining the

East Garden Grove-Wintersburg Channel’s flow to Outer Bolsa Bay without

diversion into the wetlands while asking that the three flood control

channels currently emptying into Huntington Harbour be diverted to the

Orange County Sanitation District as soon as possible. Finally, the

council asked staff to send a letter to the state to get a timeline and

budget for the proposed work.

The California Coastal Commission will hold a public workshop on the

project today in Redondo Beach. The city’s director of planning, Howard

Zelefsky, will attend.

Representatives from the eight state and federal agencies

collaborating on the project are expected to attend to present proposals

and receive feedback.

WHAT HAPPENED

The council decided to hold a public hearing on whether it should

issue $33 million in bonds to finance the South Beach Phase II

improvements and the Huntington Central Park Sports Complex.

WHAT IT MEANS

The city is expected to award bid on the sports complex project in

September 2001, with expected completion date in spring 2003.

The sports complex will host both youth and adult sports and will be

built on 45 acres of undeveloped land on the former County of Orange

landfill site. The complex will include eight lighted combination

softball and soccer fields, two tot lot play areas, two restroom areas

and a food and batting cage concession.
