SENIOR PASTOR: Bill Welsh. Welsh came to Calvary Chapel Huntington
Beach in June 1997. He was involved at Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa for a
number of years. From Costa Mesa he and his family moved to Palm Springs,
where he served at a church for 19 years. He was later a pastor at
Calvary Chapel in Melbourne, Australia for three years and was on staff
at Calvary Chapel, Albuquerque for three years. He returned to Southern
California a little more than two years ago to lead the ministry and
worship of Calvary Chapel Huntington Beach.
PASTORAL STAFF: Alyn Loyd, associate pastor; Andrew Russell, missions
pastor; Joy Welsh, women’s ministry; Kris Langham, junior high school
pastor; Dan Ross, senior high pastor; Jeff Osborne, children’s pastor;
Guillermo Dasilvada, Spanish ministry. Additional ministry leaders
oversee various other areas of outreach and service.
SIZE OF CONGREGATION: About 1200 attend on Sunday morning.
MAKE UP OF CONGREGATION: A full spectrum of ages is represented. There
are many young families and a growing number of teenage and college-age
young people. Members come from Huntington Beach, Westminster, Long
Beach, Seal Beach, Garden Grove and a number of other nearby communities.
CHILD CARE: Child care is provided for all Sunday morning services and
for Wednesday night Bible study.
TYPE OF WORSHIP: Services use contemporary worship music led by a
praise band with an occasional blend of classic worship songs -- hymns
and Christian praise and worship “hits.”
TYPE OF SERMON: Welsh employs a verse-by-verse study of the Bible,
which is traditional for Calvary Chapel churches. He relates the truth of
God’s word to daily life and to the future hope of the return of Jesus
Christ. Welsh is said to have a personable and practical teaching style.
UPCOMING SERMON: Welsh is about to begin a verse-by-verse study
through the Sermon on the Mount, which is recorded in Matthew 5-7. In
these chapters Jesus instructs His Disciples in the basics of
discipleship.
RECENT SERMON: A two-part sermon entitled “Your Pits and the Purpose
of God” was a message taken from Psalm 40:1-3, which tells the story of
David when he declared “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud
and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He
put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see
and fear and put their trust in the LORD.”
VISITOR HOSPITALITY: Greeters welcome people at the door and newcomers
are encouraged to fill out a visitor’s card. All church members are
encouraged to be unofficial greeters to newcomers. Newcomers are not
asked to stand or identify themselves during the worship service. They
are served a free beverage from the Common Ground Cafe inside the
fellowship area. The entire congregation takes a few minutes just before
the sermon message to greet the people around them.
CLASSES, SPECIAL EVENTS, & SUPPORT GROUPS: New Believers Class,
Christian Apologetics, “Get Up And Go” Missions Course.
OUTREACH PROGRAMS: Local outreach programs include: Yearly
evangelistic outreaches in North Orange County. Global outreach programs
include: Ongoing mission involvement in Mexico; missionary outreach in
Romania to orphans and street children; and a ministry house in
Bucharest. The church has purchased 20 countryside acres to develop a
summer camp/retreat center and ministry training center for that region
of Europe. The church conducts a yearly missions school called “Get Up &
Go” to prepare Christians for short-term outreach missions. These mission
teams have gone to Romania, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Philippines,
the United Kingdom, Russia and a number of other locations.
MISSION STATEMENT: “It’s All About Jesus.” The church’s desire is to
take the Good News of the Saving Gospel of Jesus Christ to as many men,
women and children as possible.
PHILOSOPHY: “Our purpose as a church, according to Jesus, is to love
the Lord with all our heart -- love one another -- and love the “lost” as
we share the Gospel everywhere we can. Our desire is to lead as many as
we can to Jesus Christ and to equip as many as we can to serve Jesus
Christ and to send as many as we can into various fields of ministry,
locally andglobally.” The church has a very strong missions focus that is
supported by a strong and growing congregation.
CHURCH DESIGN: The congregation currently meets in a renovated
warehouse while members look for permanent facilities in Huntington
Beach. They recently converted the fellowship area into the Common Ground
Cafe. The cafe has an espresso machine and quite a menu. The renovation
allows members to linger over coffee and enjoy each other’s company a bit
longer. The church plans to build a mission-style facility to house a
K-12 Christian school, a Bible college and a missionary training school
along with its other facilities. While actively pursuing adequate
property to meet its ministry needs, the congregation retains its
philosophy that the primary important focus is the people; any building
will be left behind one day. Lives touched are of eternal value.
INTERESTING NOTE: Psalm 90:16-17 is the congregation’s request to God.
It reads, “Let your work appear to your servants, and your glory to their
children. And let the beauty of the lord our God be upon us. And
establish the work of our hands for us; yes, establish the work of our
hands.”
