Air Force Airman Shawn D. Nguyen graduated from basic military

training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Nguyen

successfully completed 6 weeks of training. He is the son of resident

Thuy Nguyen. . . . Navy Ensign Angela J. Soranno, daughter of Roseira C.

Moreno and Robert J. Soranno, recently graduated from the United States

Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., with a bachelor’s degree in

oceanography. . . . The California State, Long Beach chapter of Phi Alpha

Theta, an international honor society that promotes the study of history,

recently inducted 17 graduate and undergraduate students at its

end-of-the-year ceremony, among them, Robin Alexander and Jennifer Leath.

. . . Kelii H. Chock has graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in

Colorado Springs, Colo., and was commissioned as a second Lieutenant. The

graduate served as an academy cadet senior officer that provided

leadership, motivation and direction for the cadet wing and demonstrated

effective officership in support of unit mission objectives. Chock is the

son of Jo A. Chock of Huntington Beach. . . . Jay Davis, a local

health-care executive, has been named chairman of the Long Beach Area

Chamber of Commerce. Davis has assumed the position to oversee the

private, nonprofit organization that represents and promotes the

interests of Long Beach’s business community. . . . Huntington Beach

resident Jay Davis, executive vice president of Universal Health Care in

Signal Hill, has been named chairman of the Long Beach Area Chamber of

Commerce. He will oversee the private, nonprofit organization and work

with the board of directors to cultivate existing businesses and attract

new ones to the Long Beach area. Davis was promoted to his current

position with Universal Health Care in 1985 and is responsible for

expansion and development strategies. . . . Air Force 2nd Lt. Donna E.

Silva has arrived for duty at McGuire Air Force Base in Trenton, N.J.

Silva, the daughter of Jim and Connie Silva of Huntington Beach, is

assigned to the 305th Civil Engineer Squadron as a squadron section

commander. Donna Silva is a 1996 Marina High School graduate and a 2000

graduate of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs,

Colo. . . . Navy Ensign Jason S. Nakata recently received his commission

as a naval officer after completing Officer Candidate School at Naval

Aviation Schools Command, Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. He

received training in naval warfare and management and participated in

daily fitness programs involving swimming, running and calisthenics.

Nakata is the son of Jennifer and Jeffrey Nakata of Huntington Beach.

Jason Nakata is a 1994 Marina High School graduate, and received a

bachelor’s degree from Occidental College in 1998. . . . Michael James

Dexter of Huntington Beach has earned the title of Eagle Scout, the

highest advancement award offered by the Boy Scouts of America. Dexter is

one of about two percent of all Boy Scouts to attain the Eagle rank. Each

candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a church,

community, or synagogue-related project to earn his eagle. Dexter built a

fence to stop children from running into the path of oncoming cars at

Mile Square Regional Park. He is a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic

Church and played volleyball at Servite High School, where he recently

graduated. He is the son of Jim and Susie Dexter of Huntington Beach.
