NHBA: CdM 14s edged by Anaheim

Tony Altobelli

PLACENTIA - The Corona del Mar Pony 14 All-Star team nearly pulled

off a nice, little comeback, but fell short, 9-6, in the first round of

the District Tournament to Anaheim Friday night.

“These kids battled all the way to the end and that was nice to see,”

Manager Kevin Quick said. “One early mistake snowballed into a four-run

hole and we made a couple of baserunning mistakes late in the game, but I

liked our effort out there tonight.”

Tyler Lance went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs for CdM,

while Blake Allred reached base three times, scored twice and drove in

one run.

CdM trailed, 7-0, going into the bottom of the fourth inning, but the

locals scored two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to pull

to within one.

However, a costly baserunning error prevented further damage in CdM’s

four-run fifth inning and in the sixth, CdM had runners on second and

third with nobody out, but could not score.

In the sixth a slow roller to the shortstop fooled the CdM runners and

an out was recorded at third base. Another runner was thrown out trying

to steal third and suddenly, the game-tying threat was gone.

“Our runner trying to steal got a terrible jump and I was hoping he

was going to go back to second,” Quick said. “We were coming into this

tournament hoping to do well and we’re still not out of it. It’s just

going to be much harder now.”

CdM will play again today against Saddleback at 1:30 p.m. in

elimination action.
