CIF playoffs in full swing this week

Several local teams opened CIF Southern Section playoff action this
past week, and a few more will begin their bids for a championship this
weekend as the first round of the baseball and softball playoffs begin.
The boys’ volleyball playoffs are nearly a week old and Fountain
Valley, Marina and Ocean View are still going strong.
The Sunset League co-champion Barons, the top seed in the Division I
playoffs, downed Empire League runner-up Century, 15-1, 15-3, 15-7, in
second round action Tuesday night. Russell Holmes had 10 kills and seven
blocks and Joe Volz finished with 39 assists. Fountain Valley (12-3)
received a first round bye. The Barons will travel Friday to take on Long
Beach Poly at 7:30 p.m.
The Jack Rabbits, the No. 2 team out of the Moore League, needed four
games Tuesday to eliminate San Gabriel Valley No. 2 Lynwood.
Marina, which shared the Sunset League title with Fountain Valley,
received 29 kills from Drew Wilson and 25 kills from Steffin Rangel
Tuesday to turn back Canyon of Anaheim, 15-5, 15-2, 15-17, 15-13, and
advance to Friday’s third round. The Vikings (19-3) will hit the long
road to play at Marmonte League champion Royal, a three-game winner
Tuesday over Canyon of Canyon Country.
Jason Roth had 14 kills and nine bocks and Jack Hauck had 15 kills
Tuesday as Ocean View (19-1), the co-champion of the Golden West League,
stayed alive by defeating Valley Christian, 15-10, 17-15, 15-13. The
Seahawks will play at home Friday, hosting Northwood of Irvine.
Northwood, the Pacific Coast League runner-up beat perennial power
Harvard-Westlake in four games Tuesday.
Edison, runner-up in the Sunset League baseball race, will host
University Friday at 3:15 p.m. in a Division II matchup. The Trojans
(17-8-1) are the No. 2 team out of the Pacific Coast League.
Edison also comes into the first round contest with a 17-8-1 mark.
Fountain Valley will see action on Friday. The Barons, the No. 3
representative out of the Sunset League, will travel to Bell Gardens to
take on the Almont League champion Lancers in a Division I showdown. The
Lancers are 16-6 overall, the Barons, 16-10.
