Prep track and field: Day qualifies first in high jump

Track and field results which came in after presstime include the
following.
In CIF Southern Section Division III: Costa Mesa High sophomore Sharon
Day qualified first in the high jump Friday at Trabuco Hills. The
defending Division III champion cleared a 5-2 mark.
Corona del Mar’s 1,600 relay will be seeded ninth in the CIF Finals,
which is May 19 at Cerritos College. Becky Cummins, Katherine Morse,
Jaycee Mahler and Jenny Cummins ran to a 4:08.57.
In Division II at Mt. San Antonio College: Amber Steen’s CIF record in
the 3,200, a 10:27.20, surpassed the 10:32.89 run of Reyna Cervantes of
Montebello in 1989.
Among the Newport Harbor boys, Chris McMillen, who qualified second in
the 1,600, did not qualify for the CIF Finals in the 3,200, Sailors Coach
Bim Barry said. Newport senior Dan Moyer qualified sixth in the 300
intermediate hurdles (39.30) and was first in his heat.
“That was a pretty good race for him,” said Tars hurdles coach Nowell
Kay. “He finished real strong. He’s a real tough runner. He pretty much
had to win (the heat) to go on.”
