EXCHANGE PRESIDENT VISITS: Gerald Franklin, president of the National
Exchange Club, spoke to an overflow group at the Exchange Club of the
Harbor Area on Thursday and conducted a special induction ceremony for
new Exchange members. In his remarks to club members meeting at the
Newport Beach Nautical Museum, Franklin said: “Exchange is America’s
Service Club. We do everything and more than our brother and sisters
(Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis and Soroptimist) do. Be proud of what you have
accomplished, knowing that we make a difference in our communities.”
Franklin, accompanied by his wife, Evelyn, is a member of the Exchange
Club of Galleria-Houston and was installed as national president in July.
Franklin’s theme for the year is “Ignite the Excitement: A new Century of
Service” has been well received by members around the country, including
District President Rick Gordon from Claremont, District Secretary Ed
Harvey, District Treasurer Ken Owens, District President-elect Dick
Freeman and Region Vice President Ed Kohlmeier, all of whom attended the
luncheon.
Before inducting Art McIntosh, Bob Golding, Steve Peterson and Art
Gronsky, Franklin cited club members Bill DeMuelle, Bill Barrington, Mike
Gartner, Gary Tewinkle and Norman Van Herzon for their outstanding work
on behalf of Exchange. In the absence of club President Tom Norton,
President-elect Dan Palmer presided at the meeting.

surviving member of the founding group of Myford Irvine, Les Stephenson,
Had Ring and Tom Henderson. Death took longtime board members Stephenson
and Sam Barnes earlier this year. With Seymour Beek presiding, six new

stories of growing up and living in the Newport-Mesa community.
