CORONA DEL MAR - The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team
grabbed a piece of the Pacific Coast League title following Friday’s
15-2, 15-9, 15-4 win over visiting Costa Mesa.
“That was one of our goals going into this season,” CdM Coach Steve
Conti said about the PCL crown. “We want to get as good a seed as we can
for the upcoming playoffs.”
Bart Welch led the Sea Kings with six kills, four aces and even digs,
while Ryan Inman added seven kills and two aces.
Despite being on top of the PCL, there’s still match to go, Friday’s
6:30 p.m. nonleague clash with crosstown rival Newport Harbor in the Sea
Kings’ gym.
“These are the fun matches you look forward to the most,” Conti said.
“Whoever wins that contest will have the momentum going in the right
direction for the playoffs.”
Carlos Jaime led the Mustangs with six kills. “If we would have played
as good (Friday) as we did (Thursday) in the Alumni Game, this match
would have gone five,” Mesa Coach Dave Sorrells said. “I’m looking
forward to next season. We’ve got the foundation in place for something
special down the road.”
