OCC inducts new members of Alumni Hall of Fame

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE -- Orange Coast College on Friday inducted three
new members, including former Costa Mesa mayor Mary Hornbuckle, into its
Alumni Hall of Fame.
The other two alumni are Daniel G. Amen, a Newport Beach
neuropsychiatrist, and Harold Burch, a New York designer.
The trio are the college’s 58th, 59th and 60th members of the Alumni
Hall of Fame.
Hornbuckle has lived in Costa Mesa since 1965. She earned an OCC
certificate in early childhood education and received her B.A. in
organizational management from Vanguard University.
She was elected to the Costa Mesa City Council in 1984 and served
through 1996. She served as mayor from 1990 to 1992.
Hornbuckle has been director of the St. Mark Community Preschool in
Newport Beach for the past 12 years. She also served as chair and vice
chair of the Costa Mesa Redevelopment Agency and sat on the founding
board of the Newport-Mesa Schools Foundation.
She is currently chair of OCC’s Early Childhood Education Advisory
Committee, a member of the board of the Costa Mesa Community Foundation,
and vice president of the Girl Scout Council of Orange County.
Amen was an OCC honor student and a member of the college’s
nationally-ranked forensics team. He earned a B.A. from Vanguard
University and a doctorate of medicine, magna cum laude, from Oral
Roberts University.
The Amen Clinic for Behavioral Medicine in Newport Beach specializes
in diagnosis and treatment for neuropsychiatric, behavioral and learning
problems. Amen has penned 15 books, including 1999 New York Times
bestseller “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life.”
Burch was an OCC art student from 1968 to 1971. He earned a Bachelor
of Fine Arts degree in advertising and graphic design from the Art Center
College of Design in Los Angeles. He has created design projects for such
clients as NASA, Disney Epcot Center, Houghton Mifflin, Viking/Penguin
Books, the University of Southern California, Playhouse International
Pictures and AFS International.
In 1992, he founded the Harold Burch Design company, which specializes
in corporate and publication design. He has earned more than 200 national
and international design awards. Examples of his work are in the
permanent collection of the Library of Congress. His work has also been
shown in group shows and galleries, including the Laguna Beach Museum of
Art, the Long Beach Museum of Art and the Riverside Museum of Art.
