The Mets received solid pitching performances from a trio of hurlers
Saturday, and came up with just enough offensively to hold off the
Yankees, 4-3, in a Majors Division game.
Pitchers Jon Grothe, Troy Davis and Scott Melchert combined for nine
strikeouts and limited the Yankees to three hits total.
Melchert gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when
he doubled home Matt Mountford. The Yankees, however, came right back in
the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. They did so on a walk, a
double by Joseph Park and RBI ground outs by Anthony Peralta and Adrian
Conger.
The Mets responded and forged a 3-2 lead when Melchert’s second double
of the day drove home Darryl Bennett and Mountford.
Yankee Daniel Williams had a ground out RBI in the third inning to tie
the score Yankees at 3-3. The Mets responded, this time when Grothe, who
had two hits, singled home Michael Cherf with the game-winning run.
The Yankees received outstanding pitching from Park and Williams, who
combined for 12 strikeouts while limiting the Mets to four hits.
Park had two for the Yankees.
