The second event of the 2001 Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series
proved to be one of the series’ most challenging events ever. Bron
Huesenstamm of Laguna Beach emerged as the weekend’s winner.
The 21-year-old edged out two-time HB Pro/Am champion Jeff Deffenbaugh
(Huntington Beach) in Sunday’s final at Goldenwest St. in Huntington
Beach, to win the $1,000 top prize.
“I’m going to pay bills,” Huesenstamm said of what he’d do with his
winnings. “I’m stoked that I won. We had good competition and some decent
waves. Beating Deffenbaugh in the final is not an easy thing to do. I am
really pleased with the outcome.”
Event Director Seth Matson said that the competitors had tricky
conditions to work with.
“This was one of the most challenging events in the Surf Series
history,” he exclaimed. “On Saturday, the waves were 2-4 feet, and the
weather was extremely cold, windy and stormy. Temperatures were down in
the 30s. On the other hand, on Sunday, it turned out to be a beautiful
day, with 3-6 foot waves and hot, sunny conditions. My hat goes off to
all competitors in this event. Endurance was the key factor in winning.”
Other first place winners during last weekend’s competition were Tommy
Hennekan (Super Grom); Chad Compton (Boys; scored a perfect 10 in the
final); Dave Pena (Juniors); Jonathon Atchley (Mens); Mark Austin
(Masters); Liz Kampen (Womens); Joey Hawkins (Longboard) and Maui’s Randy
“Goose” Welch (XS City Airshow).
