Spirk has no-hitter for Marlins

The Marlins were two-time winners during the week in Fountain Valley

Little League Majors Division action at Mile Square Park, with pitcher

Jeff Spirk leading the way with a no-hit pitching performance.

The Marlins edged the Yankees, 3-2, thanks to Justin Sugamura’s RBI

single, which scored Spirk in the bottom of the sixth inning. Spirk, who

earlier had singled in the game, reached base in the sixth on a triple.

Spirk also tamed the Yankees with 13 strikeouts in a no-hit effort.

Matt Fink and Mark Cubberly scored for the Yankees.

The Mariners also fell victim to the Marlins, 16-7. A 12-hit

performance by the Marlins was highlighted by a two-RBI home run by Ryan

Haskin, Nick McIssac going 3 for 3 with a double, Spirk and Jordan Brown

each getting two singles, and Haskin with a double.

Matt Hernandez had three singles and an RBI and scored once, Ryan

Buckles had a double and scored twice, and Justin Maddux singled and

scored twice for the Marlins.

IN OTHER GAMES:

* Devil Rays 7, Cardinals 2

Les Obie and Kevin Smisko each had three hits, including back-to-back

doubles, Alex Moreno had a double and single with four RBIs, and Smisko

threw a complete game with nine strikeouts and no walks for the Devil

Rays.

The Cardinals scored their three runs in the third inning on hits by

Taylor Fah, Gordon Edwards, Andrew Bender and Brian Faust.

* Dodgers 6, Mariners 3

Drew Adams, Joel Stanton and Luis Pedroza all singled and scored for

the Dodgers, and Adams and Stanton combined for 10 strikeouts on the

mound for the Dodgers.

Joe Musser doubled and singled and Ryan Buckles doubled to lead the

Mariners.

* Devil Rays 11, Dodgers 7

Alex Moreno hit a three-run home run, Les Obie had a double, single,

and three RBIs for the Devil Rays; and Kyle Zeithing and Joel Stanton

both singled twice for the Dodgers.

* Yankees 5, Cardinals 2

Mitch Myers hit a two-RBI double, Matt James had a pair of singles,

and Geoff Feltman and Mark Cubberly each had an RBI single as the Yankees

took over sole possession of second place.

Andrew Bender and Ricky Rea had singles for the Cardinals.

* Yankees 16, Dodgers 5

Mike Delicci singled and tripled, Sara Mitchell doubled and singled,

and Joe Invidiata doubled for the Yankees; and Farzan Namvari singled

twice and Kevin Osaki doubled for the Dodgers.

* Diamondbacks 18, Yankees 7

Kyle Myers had two triples and a single, Cody Morad went 3 for 3, Zack

LaMantain doubled and singled, Matthew Souders two singles, Eric Hamilton

doubled, and Brandon Wilson had an RBI single for the D-backs; and

Garrett Kocsuta delivered a two-RBI triple for the Yankees.

* Mariners 12, Cardinals 6

Shawn Watkins had a three-run home run and Joe Peters singled and

doubled for the Mariners; and Steve Andreen doubled for the Cardinals.

* Mets 13, Dodgers 5

Trevor Calhoon had two hits to lead the Mets; and Kevin Osaki had a

three-RBI triple for the Dodgers.
