Boys and girls swimming: Mesa swim squads lose

COSTA MESA - The Costa Mesa High boys and girls swimming teams

suffered Pacific Coast League losses, yet the Mustangs were able to earn

several individual victories Wednesday against visiting Laguna Beach.

Mesa’s girls squad (1-3 in league) lost, 91-72, as seniors Jody and

Wendy Martinovich and Erin Bayes finished as double winners. Jody

Martinovich won the 500-yard freestyle (5:37.20) and the 200 free

(2:06.79), while her twin sister took the 200 individual medley (2:28.21)

and 100 breaststroke (1:14.86). Bayes grabbed victories in the 50 free

(25.34) and 100 free (55.58). The trio teamed with Shirley Peng to win

the 200 free relay (1:54.79).

The Mustangs boys team (0-4), which began with nine swimmers this

season, lost 86-39. Mesa freshman Brian Tipton, junior Chasen Marshall,

senior Mike Whitman and junior Steven Thomas swam to victory in the 200

medley relay (2:03.28).

Whitman also won the 100 butterfly (59.11) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.94). Thomas and Marshall shared second place in the 50 free

(26.51), Marshall took third. And Marshall finished second in the 100

free (59.84).

The Mustangs’ next meet is Apirl 24, when they host Mater Dei.
