School Traffic Issues
The Student Political Action Committee at Newport Harbor High School
is a group that studies issues concerning the campus and students. This
year one of the hot topics for the group has been the traffic, parking
and safety at the school.
What to expect: Tonight members of that committee will present their
findings from surveys, interviews and observations of the traffic safety
issues related to pedestrian traffic and parking availability.
Woodland Elementary
A committee of parents and teachers from Kaiser Primary Center
petitioned the school board last month to change the name of the school
back to its original name of Woodland School.
Trustees gave their approval, but need to pass a resolution to make it
official.
What to expect: The school board is expected to unanimously pass a
resolution changing the name of Kaiser Primary Center to Woodland
Elementary School.
Bus Grant
The 2000-2001 state budget set aside $50 million to replace school
buses that do not meet the latest safety requirements and are
high-polluting vehicles. The district transportation department is
seeking board approval to apply for some of that money.
The grant would cover $112,000 of the estimated $137,000 price of each
compressed natural gas bus or $84,000 towardthe estimated $109,000 of
each clean diesel bus. Newport-Mesa currently has 16 buses that qualify
for replacement, according to district staff. The program would also pay
100% of the purchase and installation of emission filters, of which 43
Newport-Mesa buses need.
What to expect: The school board is expected to give the
transportation department permission to apply for the grant. If the grant
is awarded, the district would receive $1.8 million toward the purchase
of 16 compressed natural gas buses. The district would be expected to pay
approximately $400,000.
