Twenty Minute Workout is a new fitness facility that opened in Newport
Beach. The idea behind the Twenty Minute Workout is this: by lifting
weights slowly at low repetitions, you’ll lose weight and tone your body
in a very short workout. The SuperSlow method grew out of a study in the
early ‘80s funded by the Nautilus Exercise Corp.
“We do only one set of five weight-bearing exercises and each
repetition takes approximately 10 seconds to complete the positive
movement and another ten seconds to complete the negative movement,” said
Wes Scarberry, owner of Twenty Minute Workout, in a press release. “Our
goal is to bring the client to temporary muscle exhaustion within no more
than six repetitions on each of five exercises. We never train our
clients more than twice a week.”
The limit on two training sessions a week is to allow the muscle
growth that the client has stimulated to have a chance to develop,
according to Scarberry. The workouts are by appointment and are private.
At the facility there are “no mirrors, no music and no interruptions,”
Scarberry said.
This SuperSlow program has been getting some national media attention.
There was an article about it in Newsweek in February and a demonstration
of the exercise program on “The Today Show.” Two more Twenty Minute
Workout facilities are scheduled to open in the Newport-Mesa area later
this year. The facility is at 120 Suite F Tustin Ave. in Newport Beach.
