Costa Mesa High senior Nancy Hatsushi and Newport Harbor High
junior Tony Melum have been named All-CIF Southern Section in their
respective basketball divisions.
Hatsushi, who led the Mustangs to the CIF Division III-AA second
round, is a second-team selection in Division III.
The 6-foot-6 Melum, who led Newport-Mesa District scorers by averaging
18.5 points per game, was a second-team honoree in Division I-A.
Hatsushi, a 5-4 point guard, averaged 13.7 points in her fourth
varsity season, in which the Mustangs finished 16-13. She also amassed
210 assists (7.3 per game) to bring her career total to 675, the school’s
career record.
Hatsushi, a dangerous shooter (51 three-pointers) who also regularly
broke down defenses with penetration, is a three-time All-Pacific Coast
League performer who has been All-Newport-Mesa District the last two
seasons (this year’s squad has yet to be announced).
Melum, whose sophomore season was hampered by a broken hand, played
all 28 games for the Sailors this season, scoring in double figures in
all but one. He also averaged 9.9 rebounds and shot nearly 51% from the
field (193 of 379).
For the second straight season, Melum saved his best performance for
the playoffs. He posted a season-high 32 points and had 17 rebounds to
help the Tars upset Pacific, 72-69, in overtime in the second round.
Newport finished 21-7.
