Prep baseball: Twilight time at TeWinkle
Barry Faulkner
If the Costa Mesa High baseball team is going to continue its run
toward a CIF Southern Section playoff berth, the Mustangs will have to do
so at their home away from home.
“We’ve played the last (regular-season) home game at our field,” said
Mesa Coach Kirk Bauermeister, who has elected to play his five remaining
Pacific Coast League home contests under the lights at TeWinkle Park,
adjacent to the Mustangs’ campus.
“With night games, we get better crowds, better umpires, the other
kids in the league come out and watch us play and more college coaches
can come out,” Bauermeister said.
The Mustangs begin their “Twilight at TeWinkle Tour” tonight at 7
against crosstown rival Estancia, which they defeated, 8-0, in the first
round.
The Eagles will host the Mustangs Friday in a 3:15 clash.
Corona del Mar, 5-0 after the first round of PCL play and 1 1/2 games
ahead of Costa Mesa and University, begins a home-and-home series against
Laguna Beach today at 3:15 at CdM.
The Artists, who made the playoffs last spring, are 1 1/2 games out of second place and risk being buried, should they not win at least one this
week.
Coach John Emme’s Sea Kings, coming off thrilling one-run wins over
University (Wednesday) and Costa Mesa (Friday in nine innings),
outslugged the Artists, 13-9, in the first round at Laguna Beach.
Meanwhile in the Sea View League, Coach Jim Kiefer’s Sailors hope to
improve upon a 1-6 league start when they visit second-place Aliso Niguel
(Wednesday) and first-place Irvine (Friday).
After winning at Woodbridge, 13-11, March 19, the Tars have dropped
four straight league games. They were outscored, 31-2, in three Sea View
setbacks last week.
