Photo of the week
-- Steve McCrank
THOUGHTS FROM THE SCENE: It was 7 a.m. and I was pounding cups of
coffee, hoping the caffeine could alleviate my head cold and clear the
Nyquil-induced haze my brain was stuck in. I was not feeling good at all
and this was not helped by the fact that I was about to shoot crew. Crew
is difficult to shoot because it is hard to get a good vantage point, as
the race is far from shore. I was able to hop onto a boat to get closer,
but, after two hours of shooting I feared all of my photos were going to
look the same. Not a problem if they only needed one photo; but I knew
the sports editor would want to fill a whole page.Orange Coast College
had racked-up a number of victories in the morning’s races, so I hung
around on the pier, hoping there would be a celebration. But it was
pretty low-key as the teams were washing and drying their boats. I was
about to leave when I heard cheering from the boat house. The men’s
varsity team had coxswain Sam Yost on their shoulders and were parading
him back to the pier. With a heave and a ho, Yost went into the drink and
I finally had a photo I was happy with.
