JIM DE BOOM -- Community & Clubs
DISTRIBUTING CHECKS: On Monday, Newport Harbor -- Costa Mesa (Harbor
Mesa) Lions President Darlene Shelley will distribute checks to
representatives of local organizations that include: Westside Boys and
Girls Club, Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, SOS Free Medical and Dental
Clinic, Orange Coast College Child Care and Scholarship, Orange Coast
Interfaith Shelter, Youth Employment Service, Women Helping Women, Lion’s
Sight and Hearing Foundation, Project Look, Lions Wilderness Camp and the
City of Hope.
The funds were raised by the club this year through several events,
such as Casino Night, the Christmas Boat Parade Party, bingo and the
annual Lions Fish Fry. In all, they totaled a record $10,000. Monday’s meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Costa Mesa Country Club, 1701
Golf Course Drive, Costa Mesa.
CHEF’S DEMONSTRATION: Rod Lewis, the chef at the Bahia Corinthian
Yacht Club was the headliner at a recent meeting of the Exchange Club of
the Orange Coast. He demonstrated how to cook salmon and how to make two
different kinds of sauces -- citrus sauce with butter and wine and caper
sauce. Members watched intently as he used a new cooker with a magnetic
surface and then let them sample the sauces on the salmon. According to
Exchange Club president Ed Kohlmeier, the presentation was beautiful and
delicious. Club members left with a copy of the recipes and an
appreciation for a really great chef who prepares their weekly luncheons.
GOVERNOR’S CITATION: Rotary District Gov. Price Shapiro presented
Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club member Syd Lucas the Governor’s
Citation for service “Above and Beyond the Call of Duty” for the club in
all avenues of service including the club’s continuing relationship with
Back Bay High School and the Alternative Education program.
FISH FRY: For most of us, the annual Lions Club Fish Fry just suddenly
appears, much as the sun rises in the East and sets in the West. We don’t
often realize the planning that goes into such an event by the sponsoring
club, the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club. According to club
president Brett Smith, many of the club’s meetings in March and more in
the coming months will be focused on plans for the annual Fish Fry, one
of the major events in the community. It will be held at Orange Coast
College.
GOOD SCOUT HONORED: Newport Beach resident Robert Summers was honored
at the Executive Board meeting of the Orange County Council of the Boy
Scouts of America on Tuesday for his leadership as chairman of the recent
Scouting for Food Plus drive. Summer organized the drive for food and
clothing that collected tons of items that were given to Second Harvest
and Goodwill Industries for distribution to the poor and hungry in Orange
County. Board Vice Chairman Bill Baker presented Summer’s with a Boy
Scout knife that, Summer noted, had a can opener. A job well done!
CRUISING THE ISLANDS: The Yachtsmen’s Luncheons for the month of April
will feature Huell Howser and a Channel 28 video presentation on the
Channel Islands. Santa Rosa Island on April 4, San Miguel Island on April
11, Angel Island on April 18 and Santa Barbara Island on April 25th. Lou
Von Dyl, program chair for the month of April, notes it is possible that
Howser might be able to attend one of the meetings held at the Newport
Harbor Yacht Club. The invitation to Howser has been extended.
