Girls track and field: No more tears for Eagles

LAGUNA BEACH - Estancia High girls track and field coach Joan
Carlisle’s shirt described just what the Eagles displayed Thursday at
Laguna Beach. The back of her Estancia track shirt had “whining” circled
with a line running diagonally through it.
In a season that began a bit behind schedule because of the rain, the
Eagles have chosen not to use any excuses. Instead, with junior varsity
call-ups, they are winning. They remained undefeated with an 80-54
Pacific Coast League victory over the Artists.
“The rain really set back the new kids more than the distance
runners,” Carlisle said. “But, now, we just want to work on each girl’s
personal record. The goal is for them to be at their best at the end of
the season.”
Though she used a soft, steady pace, Estancia senior Liz Huipe
appeared to be at her best, winning the 800 meters (2:29.1), 1,600
(5:38.9) and 3,200 (12:13.0). She also competed in the 1,600 relay and
said she wanted to sustain energy not only for the future but during
Thursday’s meet.
The Eagles (3-0, 2-0 in league) swept the 400 to earn some key points
as senior Sarah Marx finished just ahead of freshman runner-up Crystal
Rincon and freshman Aymed Toledo.
The Geider twins, Hanni and Jasmine, both juniors, also helped in the
victory. Hanni Geider won the 100 (13:28) as Jasmine finished second.
They switched positions in the 200, with Jasmine Geider winning in 27.6.
“We never get mad at each other,” said Jasmine who is the younger twin
by four minutes. “Hanni always says that (she’s the older one). She’s
someone to help me push myself. It’s fun.”
The twins also ran in the victorious 400 relay (55.20) with Marx and
Rincon. Estancia sophomore Diana Rosete racked up points with
second-place finishes in the 1,600 (5:50.3) and the 3,200 (13:30.0).
Janet Cahuanti completed an Estancia sweep in the 3,200 as she finished
third.
After Saturday’s Trabuco Hills Invitational, which will also include
Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar, the Eagles visit CdM, Thursday at 3:15
p.m.
