Softball: Sailors fall short, 1-0

GARDEN GROVE - The Newport Harbor High softball team went up
against a buzz-saw pitcher in Monday’s 1-0 loss to Tustin in the Garden
Grove Tournament second-section championship game.
Diane Lariba pitched a complete-game one-hitter with 15 strikeouts.
“She threw a great game today,” Newport Coach Jess Martinson said of the
Tillers’ hurler. “She has a good rise ball, she throws hard and she’s got
great location.”
Sailors’ hurler Kim Moore matched goose eggs with Lariba for five
innings, but a hit batsman, an error and two walks led to Tustin’s lone
run in the sixth.
“I really felt bad, because Kim pitched a great game for us, too,”
Martinson said. “One bad inning cost us the game.”
Bailey Beardon had both of Newport’s hits, while Athena Vasquez was
named to the all-tournament team.
“The team got a nice trophy and the players all got medals,” Martinson
said. “That’s something that probably hasn’t happened in quite awhile at
Newport Harbor in softball.”
The Sailors (6-5-2) will host Costa Mesa today, beginning at 3:15 p.m.
