Softball: Sailors advance to second-place championships

GARDEN GROVE - The Newport Harbor High softball team split its two
games in the Garden Grove Tournament Saturday, but still advanced to the
second-place championship game by way of the tournament’s tiebraker rule.
The Sailors (6-4-2) defeated Calvary Chapel, 5-2, before losing to
Whittier Christian, 2-1 in eight innings.
Amanda Campbell had two RBIs, while Kim Moore came through with an RBI
hit to spark Newport’s four-run first inning.
Sabrina Couch went the distance in her first pitching performance of
the season. She gave up four hits, walked two and struck out two while
allowing only one earned run.
In the nightcap, Shelby Crisp drove in Athena Vasquez to give Newport
a 1-0 lead, but Whittier Christian rallied with a run in the fourth and a
run in the eighth to pull out the win. Vasquez was strong at shortstop,
making several key plays to keep the game close.
Since Newport scored the most runs and allowed the fewest, they will
play Tustin Monday at Lake School, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
